Ultrasound Services
The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital (MLMH) provides high-quality ultrasound exams—also called sonography—as an important part of your diagnostic care. Unlike many imaging tests, ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, not radiation, to create real-time images of structures inside your body. Because there is no radiation exposure, ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive option for people of all ages, including pregnant patients. It is widely used to evaluate internal organs, soft tissues, blood flow, and fetal development.
What Ultrasound Is Used For
Ultrasound exams are typically quick and painless. A technologist applies a small amount of gel to the skin and moves a handheld device called a transducer over the area being studied. The sound waves produce live images that a radiologist interprets and shares with your provider. Common uses include:
- Abdominal and pelvic imaging: Assessing the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, and other organs.
- Vascular studies (Doppler ultrasound): Measuring blood flow to identify clots, narrowing, poor circulation, or other concerns.
- Image-guided procedures: Helping physicians place needles accurately during biopsies or fluid drainage.
- Thyroid and breast imaging: Evaluating lumps, monitoring known conditions, or checking changes over time.
- Obstetric ultrasound: Tracking fetal growth, position, and development throughout pregnancy.
At MLMH, ultrasound services are coordinated with our full range of diagnostic imaging, including X-ray, CT, and MRI. We use modern equipment and follow established protocols to ensure clear images and dependable results. Our experienced staff works closely with your ordering provider and our Director of Radiology so your exam is completed efficiently, comfortably, and with careful attention to detail.
